Mumbai’s teenage batting sensation Ayush Mhatre has shared a special message for his childhood hero and ‘idol’ Rohit Sharma as the latter made his return to domestic roots through the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. Mhatre, aged 17, is teammates with Indian captain Sharma under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane during Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir at the BKC Stadium.
Taking to his social media account, Mhatre shared a picture of himself alongside his senior colleague, and even shared a special message for the legendary Indian opening batter.
Ayush Mhatre realizes his lifelong dream
Ayush Mhatre made his professional debut for Mumbai during the earlier stages of the ongoing Indian domestic season back in late-2024. The talented 17-year-old batter was joined by Indian captain Rohit Sharma into the Mumbai squad for their match against Jammu and Kashmir at home.
On Friday, January 24; i.e., on Day 2 of the four-day fixture, Mhatre took to his social media accounts to share a picture of himself alongside Mumbai batting giant Rohit Sharma. In the caption, the youngster wrote:
“Started playing cricket by watching him bat on television to sharing a dressing room with my idol was such an unreal moment.”
Ayush Mhatre has racked up 441 first-class runs for Mumbai so far in his maiden Ranji Trophy season. The 17-year-old is averaging 40.09 in the format, and 65.42 in List A cricket.
Rohit Sharma’s much-awaited Ranji Trophy return, however, turned out to be a dull affair as the legendary Indian opener was dismissed for just three runs on Day 1 of the match. The cricketer mistimed a short delivery from Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Umar Nazir as Mumbai folded up for just 120 in their first innings.
