In a significant development, Mumbai Indians have appointed former Australia leg-spinner Kristen Beams as their new spin bowling coach ahead of the 2026 WPL. The move adds proven international experience as Mumbai Indains Women prepare to defend their title after a dominant start to the tournament’s history.

Mumbai Indians are the most successful side in the WPL so far, having won two of the first three editions. With a strong core already in place, the franchise will be keen to maintain its dominance and build further depth in its bowling unit, especially in spin-friendly Indian conditions.

Kristen Beams brings elite playing experience to Mumbai Indians

Kristen Beams, who is a former Australian international, comes to Mumbai Indians with a rich playing background. Beams represented Australia in 1 Test, 30 ODIs and 18 T20Is, and was a key figure in Australia’s World Cup campaigns.

Beams finished as the third-highest wicket-taker at the 2017 ODI World Cup, highlighting her effectiveness at the highest level. She also featured in 45 T20 matches in the Women’s Big Bash League before moving into coaching.

Beyond her playing days, Beams has established herself as a highly respected coach. She has coached in the WBBL and The Hundred, served as coach of the Australia Women’s Under-19 team, worked as National Development Lead at Cricket Australia.

She has also held the role of Community Cricket Manager, at Cricket Tasmania. By the looks of it, her experience across professional and grassroots levels of cricket adds significant value to the MI setup.

WPL champions' spin attack set to flourish under Beams

The appointment is expected to benefit Mumbai Indians, whose squad has a quality spin attack, featuring overseas stars like Amelia Kerr and Hayley Matthews, along with Indian spinners such as Saika Ishaque. All of these talented players are likely to gain from Beams’ technical insight and match awareness.

Under captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai Indians Women aim to keep setting the WPL benchmark. The addition of Kristen Beams strengthens their title defence for 2026. Mumbai Indians will open their campaign against RCB in Navi Mumbai on January 9.
