One of the most famous sporting jerseys in cricket is former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's famous No. 7 jersey.

The No. 7 jersey has been worn by famous athletes like Eric Cantona, Luis Figo, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo, to name a few, who have only elevated the status of the number around the world. In India, before Dhoni, former India pacer and now ICC Match Referee Javagal Srinath sported the No. 7 jersey before retiring in 2003.

Now, the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) has planned to retire the No.7 jersey as a mark of tribute to Dhoni's contribution to Indian cricket. The BCCI had earlier retired Sachin Tendulkar's iconic No. 10 jersey as well in 2017

As reported by Indian Express, an official in BCCI mentioned how young players and current players have been asked not to pick Dhoni's No. 7 jersey.

“The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers,”  a BCCI source was quoted as saying.

As per International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, a player can pick any number between one and 100; however, in India, the options are quite limited, with 60-odd numbers being assigned to players already.

Interestingly, Football club Napoli and NBA team Chicago Bulls retired jersey No's 10 and 23 as mark of respect to former legends Diego Maradona and Michael Jordan, respectively.
