After 11 years since MS Dhoni filed a 100 crore case against media companies, the Madras High Court has finally given a green light for the trial to begin. The High Court, on Monday, August 11, allowed MS Dhoni to proceed with his defamation case filed against Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G. Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network for accusing him of being a part of 2013 betting scandal for which Chennai Super Kings were banned from IPL for two seasons - 2016, 2017.

MS Dhoni To Record Trial Later This Year

It is a significant step for MS Dhoni and a blow to the media companies as the case is finally progressing after a decade. Now, Dhoni has been asked to be present in the court to record his evidence and also undergo cross-examination, where he will take the oath to narrate the true incidents.

However, Captain Cool has expressed his availability to record a statement only from October 20, 2025, to December 10, 2025.

“The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence,” the affidavit which was sworn by MS Dhoni as quoted by the Hindu.

Why Did MS Dhoni File A Defamation Case In 2013?

After IPL 2013, there were reports that something fishy is happening in the cash-studded league, where the top brass members of teams like CSK and RR are involved in betting, leading to a case of possible spot fixing.

Top members from CSK camp were found guilty of the betting scandal, but MS Dhoni's name too popped up in the case, where the media channels accussed the former India captain of being a part of the scandal and a hand in spot fixing, which irked Dhoni and compelled him to seek 100 crores in damages.
