Mohammed Shami is known for his exploits with the ball in hand, but in the Vijay Hazare Trophy clash Vs Madhya Pradesh, the ace bowler from Bengal showed his class and instead of the ball, weaved his magic with the bat in hand.
In a match where the Bengal middle-order flopped badly against a quality MP bowling lineup, Shami came to the rescue of the side and scored a quick-fire cameo as the Bengal team scored 269/7 in their allotted overs.
Bengal opener, Sudip Gharami scored 99, but the other batters didn't live up to the expectations as the team was set to get dismissed cheaply. However, from out of nowhere, Mohammad Shami came out of syllabus as the bowler took the attack and slammed 42 off 34 balls, with a strike-rate of 123. His onslaught ensured that Bengal reach a respectable total in the end.
Shami eyeing Champions Trophy selection
Mohammed Shami, who has not played for India since the 2023 World Cup final, also missed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to knee injury. However, he is working on his fitness and is eyeing a Champions Trophy berth.
Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, India need a quality seamer in the ODIs, and with this knock and his consistent performance in the domestic circuit, Shami has send a warning to the selectors as he aims to return to the Indian side.
Shami not considered for BGT Tests
Earlier, Shami was not considered for the final two Tests of the series due to a swollen knee. The pacer underwent a surgery in early 2024 and had a long recovery process.
There were reports that he might make a comeback in the India Test squad for the BGT Vs Australia, but he had a swollen knee which prompted the selectors to ignore him.
