Mohammad Hafeez Set For Contract Extension As PCB Undergoes Change - Reports

The sudden change in powers at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has benefitted Mohammad Hafeez as the regime faces a contemplation phase on his contract as the head coach and director of cricket, which expired after tours to Australia and New Zealand.

The PCB has decided to "wait further" on Hafeez's fate in a high-profile dual role after the board's acting chairman Zaka Ashraf resigned from his post and let Shah Khawar don his hat in an interim capacity until the board's next election, reported 'Cricket Pakistan'.

Upon his return to Lahore, Hafeez is understood to have met Khawar and COO Salman Naseer and presented a "detailed analysis" of why Pakistan suffered a disastrous fate on their marquee Trans-Tasman tour, losing Tests 3-0 and ending with a 4-1 T20I scoreline.

Hafeez To Find Contract Extension?

"Providing valuable insights and recommendations for future improvements, the 43-year-old also stated that the players' focus on the game was lacking, as their primary attention was directed towards participating in the ongoing T20 leagues associated with the franchise," the report said. "The discussion also delved into the extension of Hafeez's expiring one-month contract, which remains pending."

The PCB is understood to have delayed the announcement on Hafeez's role and potential extension until proper guidance is sought from the Inter-Provincial Ministry and has delayed the next move to the "near future"

A catch, however, is the existing Ministry's current directive which restrains the board from offering long-term contracts to coaches and support staff members.

It appears likely that Hafeez would find an extension but for a shorter term as Pakistan build towards the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. Hafeez is believed to have fans of his T20 ideology within the board and the overall set-up.
