Babar Azam Faces ICC Test Rankings Slide After 'Miserable' Series In Australia

A disappointing return to Australia with the three-match series for the Benaud-Qadir Trophy proved costly for Pakistan stalwart Babar Azam in the ICC men's Test rankings.

The elegant right-hander, who couldn't make a half-century over six innings, has suffered a two-slot decline in the top 10 best batters in the Test match world.

Done in by the premier Australian pace battery in challenging conditions, the 29-year-old collected only 126 runs over three Tests in Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney as Pakistan suffered another 3-0 whitewash Down Under.

Babar Slips In ICC Test Rankings

Coming up with scores of just 21, 14, 1, 41, 26, and 23, Babar failed to stretch his multiple starts into something truly substantial towards Pakistan's cause and endured a slip from the eighth to the tenth slot among batters with a dwindled tally of 768 points.

Babar would've been livid with the trip he had in Australia after embracing shores amidst great expectations following a pathbreaking previous series Down Under back in October 2019 where he collected 210 runs in his two Tests versus the Aussies.

That began a sustained period of excellence for the young Pakistani batter, where he averaged 57.65 over 28 Tests with eight hundreds and 15 half-centuries until he failed in the recent series.

With a poor trip, Babar also failed to resurrect his fortunes in a chaotic little phase for the reputed cricketer after his substandard campaign and Pakistan's pre-semifinal exit in the ICC World Cup 2023 were heavily criticised.

Facing the wrath of the fans and the media, Babar was forced to resign from the captaincy across formats to relinquish some of his burden. However, there was no immediate respite for the player, who couldn't find runs to help Pakistan put up a better fight versus the mighty Aussies.
