In a significant development, former England star Moeen Ali has joined the Three Lions as a consultant to help the team prepare for the second Test. Notably, the 38-year-old is with the squad at Edgbaston, Birmingham, as part of the support staff.

According to Will Macpherson from The Telegraph, Moeen Ali has been brought in for a coaching consultancy role.

“England have been joined at Edgbaston for training today by Moeen Ali, in a coaching consultancy role,” tweeted Macpherson.

Moeen Ali to Help Bashir with Spin

England had a strong performance with the ball in the first Test, but the same could not be said for Shoaib Bashir, who was hit for runs around the ground. As a result, it is likely that the ECB has asked Moeen to help Bashir improve his line and devise ways to trouble the Indian batters.

Additionally, Moeen may also assist the England batters, as India are expected to field two spinners—Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav—for the first time in the series.

In recent times, several former greats have opted for consultancy roles for specific series or matches, allowing them to contribute without a full-time commitment.

Ali Follows Stuart Broad’s Footsteps

Notably, Moeen Ali is following in the footsteps of former England teammate Stuart Broad, who recently served as a bowling consultant for South Africa in the all-important WTC final against Australia.

Broad helped the South African bowlers and provided guidance on Lord’s, a venue where he has enjoyed considerable success. The short stint proved beneficial, as South Africa lifted their first ICC trophy in 27 years.

When asked about a full-time coaching role with South Africa, Broad declined, stating that he was available for only one match. Similarly, Moeen Ali is expected to act as a coaching consultant for a single Test and will leave the squad before the third Test.
