Former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath has been dropped from the ABC commentary duties ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 Ashes series owing to his partnership with a major betting agency. The broadcaster has a strict rule that prevents staff members from being associated with such agencies.
Interestingly, McGrath was listed as one of the commentators for the Ashes up until a week ago. The cricketer’s management team informed the network of an upcoming partnership with Bet365, before the two “mutually parted ways” just before the Ashes.
Glenn McGrath follows Mitchell Johnson, falls victim to ABC’s strict policy
In an official statement and as quoted by The Guardian, an ABC spokesperson confirmed that Glenn McGrath and the broadcaster have “mutually parted ways” just ahead of the 2025-26 Ashes series. The spokesperson also added that the ABC is still looking forward to seeing McGrath around the grounds during the series, and publicly claimed that the network would “welcome working” with the legendary fast bowler in the future.
Much like how Glenn McGrath was dropped from the ABC commentary panel for his involvement with Bet365, a gambling company, fellow ex-Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson also parted ways with the network back in 2022 for his association with betting agencies.
Gambling companies in Australia routinely link up with former athletes to strengthen their association in sports. Cricket, however, has faced scrutiny in Australia for its links with the industry.
Active Australian opening batter Usman Khawaja even recently called out the Albanese government for “being too slow” in banning gambling ads.
As the Ashes draw closer, Glenn McGrath’s departure once again highlights the tightening scrutiny around gambling ties in Australian cricket and the growing push for clearer boundaries within the sport.
The 2025-26 Ashes series to kick off on November 21 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
