The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently hunting for a suitable candidate for coaching India's senior women's cricket team. As per a report in Insidesport, former South Africa player and 2011 World Cup-winning coach with India, Gary Kirsten has shown disinterest in the role, citing his duties in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and other franchise leagues around the world.

Now, former England captain Charlotte Edwards has entered the fray. Edwards, who coached the Mumbai Indians (MI) to their title-winning run in the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) this year, is a front-runner for the role.

England's World Cup-winning skipper Edwards' rapport with Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur could also help her land the role, given their successful working relationship in MI.

The 43-year-old has provided coaching services to Southern Brave in the Hundred, Sydney Sixers in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), and the Southern Vipers in the English domestic circuit.

Former Mumbai player Amol Mazumdar is also in the running for the role, along with current interim coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Kanitkar took over control of the Indian women's team led by Kaur after Ramesh Powar left for the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in December 2022.

Powar is working as a spin bowling coach under former India legend VVS Laxman, who serves as head of NCA.

The new coach's tenure could be for two years, with as many ICC events lined up; 2024 Women's T20 World Cup and 2025 Women's World Cup.
