Michael Vaughan urges Pant to stop overthinking in ODI cricket

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that Rishabh Pant was overthinking when he got out for a duck in the second ODI at Lord's Cricket Ground.

While chasing a total of 247 to clinch the series in the second ODI, the Indian wicket-keeper batter was dismissed in a comical way when he casually dispatched a simple catch to mid-on, off a full toss. Pant faltered for a duck and it ignited the debate over his shot selection again.

Speaking in a panel discussion on Cricbuzz about Pant's dismissal, Vaughan said that there is no reason for the left-handed batter to be "ultra-aggressive" in limited-overs cricket.

“I would say to Rishabh Pant, don’t be ultra-aggressive. He has got his license to be aggressive in white-ball cricket, but in red-ball cricket, it just looks like a careless approach,” Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

Vaughan further said that he feels Pant is "overthinking" in white ball cricket and he should focus on his naturally aggressive and free-flowing style of play instead.

“And in white ball cricket, it looks like he is almost overthinking it. He is that one player in that space who can win India a game in a space of 15 overs of batting. He is such a good player, you just want him to have that freedom. Not to be worried about the shots that he is playing even he is getting out. His job according to me in this Indian team is to go for course chaos,” he added.

The ex-English batter opines that Pant just needs to play his natural game in order to be successful in white ball cricket for India.

"He just needs to be even more aggressive, that’s the way out for Rishabh Pant.”
