For a long time, the Kiwi stars have amazed cricket fans across the globe with their expertise, and Glenn Phillips is one of the big names among them. But after an unfortunate injury, he has been away from the side for a long time now.

As he is in his recovery period, the star all-rounder is not rushing the process. With his sights firmly set on the upcoming T20 World Cup, he’s determined to regain full fitness and make a strong comeback on the big stage.

Phillips takes a measured path to full fitness

Over the years, Glenn Phillips has been a powerhouse in New Zealand’s lineup, but his absence has left a noticeable void in the side. After an injury in the IPL 2025, he sustained a groin injury while playing the MLC 2025 final for Washington Freedom. Those injuries cost him big as he has been absent from the Kiwi squad since the Champions Trophy 2025.

As he is on his road to recovery from the injury, Phillip doesn’t want to rush the recovery process. In a recent interaction, he revealed that there’s no fixed timeline for his comeback as he is eyeing to be game-ready ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“When you do both groins, the rehab and recovery is a little bit longer. At this stage, no date in mind. It'll probably be for (domestic side) Otago before coming back to the Black Caps side of things. I definitely need to test things in an environment before going into the international scene,” he said.

“Once my leg has been loaded enough to be able to perform the way that I do in the field is the main thing. I give everything 100 percent and if, at 100 percent, I'm a little bit weak, then I'm not ready to go. So we'll just wait until that stage,” he added.

Reconnecting with teammates lifts Phillips’ spirits

Being away from the New Zealand team for months, Glenn Phillips finally got a chance to train with them. Speaking about the experience, Phillips shared that it felt incredible to be back with the boys, soaking in the familiar energy of the team.

“Yeah, it's great, it (Dunedin) is obviously a little bit of a home, so I'm feeling with the boys here and getting back to see guys that I haven't seen in a while,” he added.

As the T20 World Cup is coming up next year, Glenn Phillips’ presence in New Zealand’s squad will be crucial for the side. In the previous three editions of the marquee tournament, the ace all-rounder has been a massive strength for the squad. As they gear up for another shot at glory, his presence could be the spark they need for a major turnaround.
