MCC Suggests Reduction Of ODI Cricket; Wants More Efforts To Protect Test Cricket

England-based Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has offered a suggestion of significantly reducing ODI cricket from the ICC calendar. World Cricket Committee, formed by the club, discussed this possibility during a recent meeting conducted on the sidelines of the second Ashes 2023 Test at Lords.

Former England captain Mike Gatting led the MCC’s 13-member committee, which came up with this proposal in lieu of the ever-increasing T20 leagues across the world.

MCC proposes conditional restriction on ODIs

The MCC’s World Cricket Committee is of the belief that T20 franchise leagues throughout the year are dividing players’ attention between club and international cricket.

Not long ago, star England batter Jason Roy left a part of his ECB’s incremental contract to participate in USA’s upcoming T20 competition, Major League Cricket (MLC). New Zealand’s speed veteran Trent Boult also gave up his central contract and his currently serving as a T20 freelancer in IPL, BBL and ILT20 leagues.

In a bid to avoid players foregoing their national contracts and giving a jam-packed international calendar some breathing space, the MCC has suggested that the ICC should significantly reduce men’s ODI bilateral matches following the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The custodians of the cricket law also suggested that the apex body should organise ODIs between countries only during a 12-month period that precedes any ODI World Cup.

The ICC issued its Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2023-27 last year.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, ICC’s general manager Wasim Khan said that they will not be removing anything and are looking forward for international cricket to co-exist with franchise leagues going ahead.

As of now, fans are embracing themselves for the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, set to be hosted by India later this year. A lot is riding with the tournament, and its success may well define the fate of the format for the years ahead.
