Pakistan’s cricket team is gearing up for a highly anticipated white-ball series in Australia, and there is a boost for the squad with leg-spinner Usama Mir successfully clearing his fitness test. Conducted under the supervision of the PCB selection committee, the assessment saw involvement from notable figures like Aleem Dar and Aaqib Javed, along with the team’s medical staff.
The new selection committee, formed hours after Pakistan’s inning and 47-run run defeat against England in the first Test, is on a mission to bring radical changes to Pakistan’s cricketing culture.
Informally headed by Aaqib Javed, the committee dropped Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah from the remainder of England series and ahead of the white-ball tour to Australia, many more lineup revamps are expected.
Usama Mir declared fit ahead of Australia tour
Cricket Pakistan recently reported that leggie Usama Mir was asked to clear a fitness test to be considered for selection. He ran 2.1 km within 8 minutes to clear the parameter and is set to feature in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Australia tour.
In addition to Mir, the PCB is expected to make several key adjustments to the squad, with reports indicating that wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is set to take over as captain for the white-ball formats. Babar Azam, who resigned from captaincy, will return to the white-ball setup alongside Afridi and Naseem.
There is also excitement surrounding the potential inclusion of young talents like Mehran Mumtaz and Sufiyan Muqeem, who may make their international debuts during the series.
Notably, the Pakistan team is scheduled to depart for Melbourne on October 29, and they will begin preparations with training sessions. The series will kick off with the first ODI at the MCG on November 4.
PCB likely to drop Fakhar Zaman as disciplinary action
Pakistan’s explosive batter, Fakhar Zaman, is likely to lose his place in the white-ball format over an irresponsible tweet he posted in support of Babar Azam. Shortly after Babar was dropped from the Test side, Zaman strongly condemned PCB’s decision. However, as a central contract player, his actions violated the player code of conduct, and as a repercussion, he is likely to be dropped from the upcoming Australia tour.
