Ravichandran Ashwin's plan to play in the overseas league after his retirement has taken a big hit as injury has ruled him out of BBL. The legendary Indian off-spinner has suffered a knee injury in Chennai and thus would not be able to play for Sydney Thunder in the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League.
The off-spinner has undergone surgery after his knee injury, and with recovery expected to take time, he will not be able to participate in BBL 15. The cricketer was supposed to be the first nationally-capped player to play in the Australian league, but the unexpected injury has dashed those hopes.
"Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash's knee injury that has ruled him out of BBL|15, and we wish him well in his recovery," Trent Copeland, Thunder general manager, said in a statement.
However, there are chances that Ravi Ashwin would be part of the Sydney Thunder setup in a non-playing capacity for the upcoming edition of the BBL. The club plans to use his experience and start a fruitful long-term journey with the Indian star.
"We are hopeful of welcoming him into our dugout for part of BBL|15, introducing him to our fans at events and building a long-term relationship".
Ashwin, on his part, has thanked Sydney Thunder management for their support. He added that he would follow all the matches of the team, and if the doctors allow, he might travel to Australia as a non-playing member.
"My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I will be watching every game (probably at odd hours in Chennai) and cheering for both our women's and men's teams. If rehab and travel line up, and only if the doctors are happy, I would love to be around later in the season and say hello in person."
The 15th edition of the Big Bash League will start on December 14, while the Sydney Thunder will play their first match against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 16.
