Madras High Court has sentenced IPS officer Sampath Kumar to 15 days of imprisonment for claiming Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni's involvement in the controversial 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.

A petition was filed against the claim by the legendary former India captain, who obviously didn't take the allegation by the officer lightly and has now earned justice in the matter, with the lawful body putting out a sentence to jail against Kumar.

A bench of Justices SS Sundar and Sunder Mohan announced the jail term but suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow Kumar to file a further appeal in the Dhoni matter.

Dhoni had earlier also filed a case against a leading Indian news channel for remarks made against him for an alleged role in the entire spot-fixing fiasco which rocked Indian cricket hard a decade back.

Three Rajasthan Royals (RR) players - S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandela and Ankeet Chavan - were claimed to be involved in fixing portions of the cricket matches in return of money handed out by the bookies.

The three players were arrested by the Delhi police and banned by BCCI for a lifetime before the matter reached the doorsteps of the Supreme Court of India, and even though the apex body found the trio guilty, it asked the Indian board to determine a length on the enforced ban as the right quantum of punishment.

In a separate case related to the matter, owners of the Royals franchise and the son of CSK's co-owner N Srinivasan, who was also the BCCI supremo at the time, Gurunath Meiyappan, were found illegally involved in betting activities. Consequently, the two franchises were banned for two years and didn't take part in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the IPL.

Since CSK were put through the disgrace, Dhoni's name did the rounds in alleged involvement, but no evidence was found by the law authorities to support the claim as the legend came out clean in the matter.
