Richa Ghosh Gets Wildcard Entry; Joins London Spirit For Women's Hundred 2023

London Spirit has roped in hard-hitting Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Richa Ghosh, for The Hundred 2023 edition on Thursday.

Ghosh is set to fill the shoes of Australian player, Georgia Redmayne, and will join the elite group of Indian cricketers to have featured in the distinctive 100-ball English tournament, a list that includes Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur.

The young stumper from West Bengal rose to prominence during the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 as India's standout player. However, her form took a hit during the Women's Premier League 2023, where she scored a modest 138 runs in eight matches at an average of 23.00, a strike rate of 135.29, and a top score of 37, playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Despite her fluctuating form, her absence from the Indian T20I team for the current Bangladesh tour surprised many fans. Yastika Bhatia, who delivered impressive performances for the Mumbai Indians - the WPL 2023 champions, was selected over Ghosh for the national team.

Furthermore, selectors picked the uncapped Uma Chetry from Assam as a backup wicketkeeper for the tour, leaving Ghosh out of the squad without any formal explanation.

It is worth mentioning that during her relatively short international career, Ghosh has featured in 17 ODIs and 35 T20Is for India, amassing a decent 311 and 563 runs, respectively.

The chance to play in The Hundred will provide the 19-year-old with an opportunity to shine in one of the most competitive women's cricket franchise tournaments. Thus, she can put herself back in contention for India selection.

Meanwhile, Heather Knight led London Spirit had a forgettable last season as they finished seventh with only two wins. In their preparation for the new season, the Spirit has retained Amelia Kerr, Charlie Dean, and Dani Gibson while releasing Beth Mooney, Megan Schutt, and Freya Davies. During the Draft picks, they signed Grace Harris, Sarah Glenn, Sophie Munro, and Sophie Luff earlier this year.
