Spinners who were banned [Source: @cric_blog/x.com]
Despite winning the first ODI Vs Australia convincingly, South Africa received a massive jolt as their spin bowling all-rounder, Prenelan Subrayen, was reported for chucking in the first game of the series. After an investigation, the Proteas bowler was suspended for the final two ODI matches.
Why was Proteas spinner banned by the ICC?
The ICC confirmed on Thursday that the match officials have reported Subrayen's bowling action, and he'll undergo an assessment of his action in the next 14 days at the ICC-accredited testing facility.
As per the rules, the spin bowler won't be allowed to bowl in competitive matches until his action gets cleared. Interestingly, this is the third time the bowler was reported for suspended action, with the first one coming in 2012.
He is not the only international spinner to get banned due to illegal bowling action. In this piece, we will jot down other spinners, who were suspended for the same reason.

- Some of the big names are included in the list, but the most prominent one was Muttiah Muralitharan. His bowling action was reported as suspect by the Australian umpires several times during the 1995 and 1999 tours of Australia.
- In the 1995 MCG Test match, umpire Darell Hair called for a no-ball during Murali's bowling as he suspected an illegal bowling action. This infuriated captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who threatened to leave the field with the entire set of players.
- Another Asian spinner, Saeed Ajmal was suspended by the ICC for illegal action. His action was deemed to exceed the 15-degree limit for arm bend. His deliveries was found to be illegal by the ICC, and he was suspended from international cricket. The spinner came back with a remodelled action, but he was never the same.
- Similarly, KKR and West Indian spinner, Sunil Narine was also suspended after an illegal bowling action. The mystery spinner came back after changing his action, but the mystery vanished as batters found it relatively easy to tackle him.
