Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, October 12.
Kuldeep Yadav takes five as India retain dominance over WI
Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav picked up four West Indies wickets on Day 3 of the series-deciding second Test in Delhi to complete a sensational five-fer, his fifth in Test career of just 15 matches. The cricketer dismissed both overnight batters, Shai Hope and Tevin Imlach inside the opening hour of the day before getting rid of Justin Greaves and number 11 Jayden Seales to claim figures of 5-82 in 26.5 overs. Kuldeep Yadav’s spell helped India gain a huge 270-run first innings lead over West Indies, before the visitors reached 173-2 following on up until stumps.
Jayden Seales punished by ICC
West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales has been punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The speedster has been fined 25 percent of his match fees after he was found guilty of throwing the ball inappropriately towards Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal on his follow-through. While Seales initially denied the charges, ICC match referee Andy Pycroft came to a conclusion that his throw was unnecessary and inappropriate as it hit the batter’s pad when the Indian opener was already well inside the crease.
Babar Azam flops, but becomes first Asian for unique WTC record
Senior Pakistan batter Babar Azam registered yet another failure, this time scoring just a timid 23 off 48 balls against South Africa on the opening day of the first Test in Lahore. Despite his constant batting setbacks, the legendary middle-order batter became the first Asian cricketer to reach 3,000 Test runs in World Test Championship (WTC) matches, surpassing the likes of India’s Shubman Gill (2,826 runs), Rishabh Pant (2,731 runs) and Rohit Sharma (2,716 runs).
With half-centuries from Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Mohammad Rizwan and Agha Salman; Pakistan reached 313-5 by stumps.
Smriti Mandhana joins elite club, becomes fastest to 5,000 ODI runs
Prolific Indian opener Smriti Mandhana struck a fluent 80 off 66 balls against Australia Women in match number 13 of the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup in Visakhapatnam. Through the course of her innings, the Indian vice-captain also completed 5,000 runs in her ODI career, becoming only the second Indian batter and fifth overall in Women’s ODI history to breach the landmark figure. Smriti Mandhana also became the fastest batter in women’s ODIs to reach 5,000 runs, achieving the feat in just 112 innings.
Zak Crawley fires Ashes warning to Australia
England opening batter and ‘BazBall’ purist Zak Crawley has fired a stern warning to Australia ahead of the 2025-26 Ashes series ‘Down Under’ later this year. Crawley, a veteran of 59 Tests and over 3,000 runs, stated that while Australia keeps talking about “moral victories”, it is actually a sign that ‘Bazball’ works in unsettling its rivals. While talking with The Times, Crawley also claimed that England will display the same aggression in Australia in the impending Ashes as they did against Team India at home a couple of months ago.
