ICC unveils Cricketer of the Year nominees

After unveiling nominees for several categories for the 2023 ICC Awards, the ICC has now announced a list of four cricketers who could win the 2023 Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Men’s Cricketer of the Year.

Indian batting legend Virat Kohli and star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja found their names in the category for their splendid run throughout the 12 months. Australian captain Pat Cummins and dashing opening batsman Travis Head constitute the elite group for the coveted Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.

Virat Kohli finished the year 2023 as its second-highest run-scorer across all formats, only finding himself behind his teammate Shubman Gill. However, Kohli scored his runs at a much higher average of 66.06 in comparison to Gill’s 46.82.

The legendary batter tallied 2,048 runs in just 36 innings, with eight centuries and 10 additional fifty-plus scores to his name. Moreover, Kohli bludgeoned 765 of those runs at the 2023 World Cup to be named the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

His teammate Ravindra Jadeja, on the other hand, features as one of the other nominees for his 66-wicket haul in the year 2023. The Indian all-rounder led Kuldeep Yadav and Australian thunderbolt Mitchell Starc by three wickets to top the leading wicket-taking charts of the year.

Australian captain Pat Cummins, meanwhile, claimed 59 wickets in 32 all-format innings and led his team to historic 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) and 2023 World Cup wins by defeating India in the finals on both occasions.

Travis Head minted 1,698 runs off his own to finish the year as Australia’s highest run-getter and fifth-highest overall after Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Daryl Mitchell, and Rohit Sharma. Moreover, Head listed match-winning hundreds in the 2023 WTC final as well as in the 2023 World Cup final.
