Team India completed their seven-wicket demolition job over South Africa on Day 2 of the series-deciding second Test match at Cape Town. The outcome ensured that Rohit Sharma and co. levelled their two-match series 1-1, after crumbling to a huge innings defeat at Centurion in late December.

India’s emphatic result also helped Test skipper Sharma to achieve a significant milestone, one which he now shares with KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav.

India returns from South Africa undefeated

Team India took flight for South Africa back in December 2023 to play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches against the hosts.

Under Suryakumar Yadav’s interim leadership, the ‘Men in Blue’ levelled there three-match T20I series by winning the final game by a staggering 106-run margin. The series commenced with a rain-affected no-result at Durban before South Africa won the second T20I by five wickets in Port Elizabeth.

The tour continued with the ODI fixtures, where KL Rahul took over leadership responsibilities from Suryakumar in the absence of a number of senior members from the team. Under Rahul, a spirited Indian side won the first and third matches to register only their second ODI series win in South Africa.

Regular skipper Rohit Sharma and fellow seniors Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah returned to India’s setup for the subsequent Test series, where they started off with a huge defeat at Centurion. The visitors bounced back in the decider at Cape Town to level their two-match rubber 1-1.

The team’s remarkable seven-wicket triumph in the Cape Town Test ensured that Team India concluded their all-format tour to South Africa without conceding a single series to the hosts, thus marking a significant first in India’s rich cricketing history.

India’s previous best results in South Africa occurred back in 2011, when they levelled their three-match Test series against the hosts but lost the ODI rubber 2-3. Later in 2018, the subcontinental giants lost the three-match Test series 1-2 but won the subsequent ODI and T20I assignments.

India, under Rohit Sharma, will now face the visiting Englishmen for a five-match home Test series between February and March. The fixtures also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
