In a significant development, Virat Kohli has been named in Delhi’s probable squad for the final two rounds of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. This development comes after Kohli’s recent struggles in against Australia in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar-Trophy (BGT). Despite scoring a century in the second innings of the first Test at Perth, he endured a string of low scores in subsequent matches.

It is also important to mention that, Virat Kohli inclusion marks a potential return to domestic cricket after 12 years, with his last appearance for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy dating back to 2012. Along with Kohli's name, Rishabh Pant is also included in the probable squad.

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) released the list of probables, which also includes pacer Harshit Rana. However, the final squad for Delhi’s next Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra on January 23 will depend on the availability of these players.  

Why Should Virat Kohli Return To Ranji Trophy? 

Virat Kohli should play in the Ranji Trophy, and it could be viewed as a critical step in addressing his recent struggles in Test cricket. If Virat Kohli plays in Ranji Trophy his primary objective should be to work on his issues with deliveries outside the off-stump. This flaw was clearly visible during his dismissal in all eight innings during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.  

Over the past four years, Kohli's form in Test has been highly criticised, with his batting average dipping below 50 for the first time in his career. It is high time that Kohli needs to regain his rhythm and confidence. A strong Ranji Trophy performance would not only boost Kohli’s confidence but also prepare him for future international challenges.
