Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) outclassed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the first qualifier of the IPL 2024 season at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

After restricting SRH’s all-firing batting unit to just 159 upfront, the Shreyas Iyer-led KKR group overhauled their task with utmost ease to qualify for the IPL 2024 finals.

KKR vs SRH Highlights: Mitchell Starc Rips Through SRH’s Top-Order

Holding the new-ball, Mitchell Starc blazed through SRH’s famed top-order with a fiery three-wicket burst in the opening powerplay. After cleaning up Travis Head for a two-ball duck, the Australian speedster dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed in succession to finish his opening spell with figures of 3-22 from three overs.

Starc’s new-ball partner Vaibhav Arora, meanwhile, accounted for the wicket of in-form opener Abhishek Sharma as SRH slipped to 39-4 in five overs.


KKR vs SRH Highlights: Rahul Tripathi’s 55 Cultivates SRH Recovery With Klaasen

Number three batter Rahul Tripathi steadied SRH’s sinking ship with a calculated 55-run knock in the middle overs. Despite early setbacks, Tripathi’s 62-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen ensured the ‘Orange Army’ soared past the 100-run mark inside just the first 11 overs of the innings.

Klaasen himself punched out three boundaries and a six in his 21-ball 32 before he became Varun Chakravarthy’s first victim of the evening.


KKR vs SRH Highlights: Varun Chakravarthy Restricts SRH To 159

After deceiving a well-set Heinrich Klaasen at 101-5, Varun Chakravarthy strangled SRH’s run-flow in the backend of the innings. The ace spinner also trapped Bhuvneshwar Kumar in front of stumps to finish his four-over spell with figures of 2-26.

Harshit Rana, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell all chipped in with a wicket each to collectively restrict the SRH to 159.

Chasing 160 for a spot in the IPL 2024 finals, KKR openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine both bludgeoned identical 20s at the top to dent SRH’s morale in the powerplay. While Gurbaz produced a fiery 14-ball 23, Narine bashed 21 runs with four boundaries to his name.

Following the dismissal of Sunil Narine at 67-2, KKR’s number three Venkatesh Iyer and skipper Shreyas Iyer counterattacked SRH’s rising rebellion with a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Both cricketers pounded four sixes each and reached their respective half-centuries in 20-odd deliveries.

Venkatesh and Shreyas also ended up sharing an unbeaten 97-run partnership from just 44 balls to take KKR past the finishing line with eight wickets and more than six overs to spare.
