In a significant development, Mumbai Indians have hinted that they would retain Rohit Sharma for the upcoming Indian Premier League season. The subtle hint from the franchise comes as a massive relief for the MI fans, who speculated Rohit Sharma's potential trade to Kolkata Knight Riders following his close friend Abhishek Nayar's appointment as the head coach of the three-time IPL champions.

MI's latest act dismisses Rohit Sharma's KKR trade talks

Recently, several reports, including one by Express Sports, claimed that Abhishek Nayar would take up the head coach role of KKR before the IPL 2026 mini auction. In fact, the Kolkata-based franchise confirmed Nayar's hiring on Thursday through a post on its official X handle.

For the unversed, Abhishek Nayar played a pivotal role in Rohit Sharma's renaissance. After the talismanic cricketer was snubbed from ODI captaincy, Nayar helped Rohit improve his fitness and shed considerable weight before the Australia tour. As a result, a fit and fine Rohit Sharma silenced his critics in style, emerging as India's top-scorer with a match-winning century in the final ODI in Sydney.

Considering Rohit Sharma's camaraderie with Abhishek Nayar, fans from both franchises anticipated a historic trade between MI and KKR, expecting the legendary Indian batter to join his long-time friend in the Knight Riders' camp. However, Mumbai Indians, through a cryptic post, hinted that Rohit wouldn't be traded to KKR, putting all the speculations to rest.

"𝗦𝘂𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 ye toh confirm hai, but at (K)night… मुश्किल ही नहीं, नामुमकिन है!," Mumbai Indians tweeted along with an image of Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma's illustrious career for MI at a glance

Hailed for his timing and scintillating stroke play, Rohit Sharma has been an integral member of the Mumbai Indians setup over the years. In 227 IPL innings, Rohit has struck 5876 runs for MI at an average of 29.53 and a strike rate of 132.22. He has also led the franchise to five IPL titles, establishing himself as one of the finest tacticians in the history of the tournament. So, if Rohit is retained, it will certainly boost MI's batting lineup, adding immense experience to their leadership group before the mini auction.
