Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been adjudged as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year as part of the ICC Awards 2024. The speedster defeated fellow nominees Kamindu Mendis, Joe Root and Harry Brook to bag the prestigious honor, as announced by the ICC on Monday, January 27.

Jasprit Bumrah finished the year 2024 as its highest Test wicket-taker by a landslide, finding himself 19 wickets ahead of second-placed Gus Atkinson, at a much better bowling average.

Jasprit Bumrah wins ICC award for landmark year

Jasprit Bumrah was crowned the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year for his landmark 12-month phase in 2024. Notably, the legendary speedster played a key role in India’s 4-1 Test series win over England back in March last year.

Overall, Bumrah picked up 71 wickets in just 26 innings spanning 13 Tests in 2024, at an impressive bowling average of 14.92. Moreover, he also held a strike rate of 30.16, the best among all bowlers from 2024 with more than 25 wickets to their names.

The right-arm fast bowler picked up 19 of those wickets in just eight innings against England earlier in the year, and 30 wickets in just four Tests against Australia in November and December during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series ‘Down Under’.

Jasprit Bumrah also became the first-ever Indian fast bowler in history to win the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award. Furthermore, the cricketer was selected in the ICC Test Team of the Year alongside Australian captain Pat Cummins.

Bumrah’s Test success aside, the 31-year-old also enjoyed a prolific year in the game’s shortest format. His match-winning and wicket-taking pedigree compounded in India’s historic 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in the USA and in the West Indies back in June.
