BCCI secretary Jay Shah has cleared the air around the reports of introducing an IPL-like league for retired players and stated that no such proposal or discussion has taken place.

Speaking with Times of India, Shah confirmed that no such league would be introduced in the near future.

“It’s fake news. No proposal has been discussed about that. No one has told me about it. However, I do not know what I will do about it if such a proposal comes.”

The rumour mill began after a report claimed that a group of retired players met Jay Shah and discussed a plan to introduce an IPL-like league for retired players.

"The report added that the board hasn’t taken a final decision on the matter. “We have received a proposal from former cricketers in this regard. We are mulling over it,” claimed the report citing a BCCI source.

Need For A League With Retired Players

At present, the BCCI rules do not permit an active Indian cricketer to feature in overseas leagues. If a player has to play in foreign leagues, he has to take retirement.

Thus, several retired players are often seen in exhibition games as seen in the recently concluded World Championship of Legends 2024, where the Yuvraj Singh-led side lifted the trophy.
