Jason Roy to miss England tour of Pakistan and T20 World Cup: Report

In what might come as a massive blow, Jason Roy is expected to miss out on England’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 following a dreadful English T20I summer.

The right-handed batter has been a mainstay in England's white-ball setup since 2015. He also played a key role in England’s ODI World Cup triumph on home turf back in 2019.

The Surrey batter, however, has been enduring a slump in form in recent times especially in the shortest format and has managed to score just 78 runs from six T20 internationals at a strike rate of 78.

The South African-born failed to make an impact in the 100-ball tournament as well, scoring just 51 runs in six matches at an average of 8.5 for the Oval Invincibles, including three ducks.

Who will replace Jason Roy?

As for his replacement, the flamboyant opening batter Dawid Malan is expected to take Roy's place at the top of the order alongside skipper Jos Buttler. The Southpaw, contrary to Jason Roy, has been going through a purple patch.

Malan is currently the leading run-scorer in the Hundred, having mustered 358 runs in eight matches at an average of 59.67 and strike rate of 172.12. Will Jacks and Phil Salt could also be added to the 15-member as the backup batting options.

Philip Salt is the second leading run-scorer in the ongoing 100-ball extravaganza with 313 runs from eight matches. Jacks, meanwhile, accumulated 261 runs in seven matches at an average of 43.50.

Matt Parkinson failed to impress selectors

In another major set of changes, Lancashire's Matt Parkinson is likely to miss the bus for the T20 World Cup 2022 as the England selectors are not convinced or rather say impressed enough by his leg spin.

Liam Dawson is likely to replace Parkinson in the squad as the backup spinner to Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid for the marquee event.

Jos Buttler to miss the Pakistan tour?

The England and Wales Cricket Boards (ECB) are also expected to name a 19-member squad for the seven-match T20I series against Pakistan, scheduled to be played just ahead of the World Cup.

As things stand, there are high chances of Jos Buttler missing the entire historic tour owing to his calf injury, which the wicket-keeper batter sustained during a match in The Hundred.

In such a case, we might see Moeen Ali donning the captaincy cap once again for the Three Lions. England will announce their 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 on Friday, September 2.
