Asia Cup 2022, Death bowlers could not execute the plan: Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan believes the death bowlers have a scope for improvement, following their failed attempt to defend the total against Sri Lanka on Thursday (1 September).

Invited to bat first, Bangladesh got notable contributions from most of the batters to post 183 on the board, which certainly looked like the winning score.

However, the Tigers could not excel in terms of their performance as a bowling unit. Their most successful bowler Ebadot Hossain returned with three scalps, albeit at a cost of 51 runs.

The penultimate over witnessed Hossain leaking 17 runs, which ultimately paved the way for Sri Lanka to win the game. Following the result of this fixture, Bangladesh were knocked out of the biennial tournament, while Sri Lanka sneaked through to the Super Four stage.

Apart from highlighting the death bowling concerns, the 35-year-old thinks Kusal Mendis (60) and Dasun Shanaka (45) batted well for Sri Lanka.

"Death bowling is something we are trying to improve. In the last two overs when they were eight down, they required 16 or 17 runs but they chased it down with four balls to spare. That shows that we failed to execute our plans. But credit to the Lankan side for the way they played. Kusal played well and Dasun also batted nicely," said Shakib.
