In other news, dynamic opener Prithvi Shaw plundered a huge Ranji Trophy batting record.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, October 27.
Yashasvi Jaiswal to play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai before SA series
Indian Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will likely play a Ranji Trophy 2025-26 match for Mumbai against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur next week. The right-handed batter has reportedly informed about his availability for the impending four-day fixture to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Jaiswal, who recently toured Australia for India’s three-match ODI series, failed to receive a single crack in the playing XI and he will likely use his planned Ranji Trophy outing to fine-tune himself for the upcoming Test series against South Africa at home.
Prithvi Shaw bludgeons one of Ranji’s fastest double tons
Indian Test discard Prithvi Shaw bludgeoned 222 runs off just 156 balls against Chandigarh in the Elite Group B game of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. Opening the innings for Maharashtra, Shaw raced to his 200 from just 141 deliveries to record the third fastest double century in the history of Ranji Trophy cricket, falling just behind Hyderabad’s Tanmay Agarwal and former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri. Prithvi Shaw’s maverick also helped Maharashtra mount 359-3d in their second innings.
Temba Bavuma returns as SA name squad for India Tests
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named South Africa’s 15-player squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against India next month. Regular captain Temba Bavuma will be making his return to the national team after recovering from his injury, while blistering young batter Dewald Brevis has retained his place in the squad. Fast bowlers like Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch will be helming South Africa’s pace department, and the likes of Keshav Maharaj, Senuran Muthusamy and Simon Harmer will serve as South Africa’s primary spinners on turning Indian pitches.
Shafali Verma replaces injured Pratika for WC semifinal
India’s hard-hitting batter Shafali Verma has replaced injured opener Pratika Rawal in the team ahead of the semifinal of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. Pratika, who has been in exceptional touch with the bat this tournament, twisted her right ankle while fielding for India against Bangladesh Women on October 26 at the DY Patil Stadium. Shafali Verma, on the other hand, last played an ODI match for India exactly a year ago during a home series against New Zealand. India’s semifinal match against defending champions Australia will be staged on Thursday, October 30.
Steve Smith to lead AUS in Ashes opener over injured Cummins
Steve Smith will be leading the Australian team at the Optus Stadium in Perth in the opening Test of the five-match Ashes series against England from next month onwards. The decision was confirmed by Cricket Australia on October 27 after realizing that injured fast bowler and regular captain Pat Cummins has run out of time to prove his fitness. Australian coach Andrew McDonald, however, is hopeful that Cummins will return to the team as a captain and a pace spearhead in the second Test of the series at the Gabba in Brisbane this December.
