West Indies edged out Bangladesh by 16 runs in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Captain Shai Hope and all-rounder Rovman Powell churned out crucial runs with the bat before fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Jason Holder hampered Bangladesh’s run-chase charge.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the first T20I of the three-match series between Bangladesh and West Indies, as it panned out at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Monday, October 27.
Shai Hope and Rovman Powell boost West Indies to 165
West Indies openers Alick Athanaze (34 off 27) and Brandon King (33 off 36) started off cautiously, taking 8.2 overs to put up a 59-run stand at the top. However, both cricketers failed to convert their starts into notable innings as they were dismissed by Rishad Hossain and fast bowler Taskin Ahmed. Number four Sherfane Rutherford was toppled by Taskin (2-36) for a first-ball duck as the West Indies slipped to 82-3 at one stage.
Captain Shai Hope at number three and Rovman Powell at number five unleashed cracking cameos for the West Indies in the slog overs, with both belligerent batters facing 28 deliveries each to score 46* and 44* runs respectively. Their collective brilliance helped West Indies chart 165-3 from 20 overs upfront.
Jayden Seales and Jason Holder wrap up Bangladesh for 149
Chasing 166, Bangladesh slipped to 57-5 around nine overs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib held Bangladesh’s faltering hopes with a top-scoring act of 33 runs from 27 balls, sharing a crucial 40-run partnership with Nasum Ahmed (20 off 13) in the process. Some crucial runs from the tail took Bangladesh closer but the hosts still fell 16 runs short of their target.
For the West Indies, fast bowlers Jayden Seales (3-32) and Jason Holder (3-31) picked up three wickets each in the innings, while ace spinner Akeal Hosein chipped in with two as the visitors shot out Bangladesh for just 149 in 19.4 overs.
