Jacob Bethell Appointed England's T20I Captain; All-Rounder Set To Break 136-Year-Old Record

The 21-year-old Jacob Bethell has been appointed as England's T20I captain for the three-match series against Ireland. The all-rounder is now set to become the youngest ever captain of England when he leads his troops in the first T20I against the Irish boys.

Monty Bowden's Record Of 1889 Set To Be Broken

Currently, Monty Bowden holds the record of being the youngest England captain. He was 23 years and 144 days old when he led his country against South Africa in a Test match in 1889. Monty got that opportunity due to the fever of Aubrey Smith, the regular captain of the side.

Now, Jacob Bethell has been given the leadership role because of Harry Brook's absence in that series. The regular England white-ball captain has been rested for the series, but the squad includes some big names like former captain Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid.

Jacob Bethell Continues His Rise In World Cricket

Jacob Bethell has played just 13 T20Is so far but has shown great consistency, scoring runs at an average of 40.14 and a strike-rate of 154.39. He is also a handy bowler and his all-round skills has helped him rise swiftly in the English cricket circuit. The cricketer last played for England in the Oval Test and is now the all-format cricketer for his country.

The southpaw made his international debut just a year ago in September 2024, but has quickly made his name across the cricketing world. He also did well for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2025, in the limited opportunities he got, and is expected to serve English cricket for a long time.

The three-match T20I series against England will start on September 17, just a few days after the completion of the T20I series against South Africa.
