His batting combines timing, temperament, and the ability to shift gears when needed, making him a modern-day ODI specialist. Over the last few years, he has delivered several memorable knocks that not only showcased his talent but also proved decisive for India. Here, we look at his five finest ODI innings.

5) 112 Against England And New Zealand

On February 12, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Shubman Gill produced a brilliant knock in the 3rd ODI against England, anchoring India’s innings with a classy 112 off 102 balls. Coming in early after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, Gill steadied the innings alongside Virat Kohli and later accelerated with Shreyas Iyer. His well-paced century laid the foundation for India’s imposing total of 356 runs, which proved too steep for England as they were bundled out for 214. 

Knocking the same 112 on January 24, 2023, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Shubman Gill once again rose to the occasion in the 3rd ODI but this time, against New Zealand, lighting up the innings with a fluent 112 off just 78 balls. Opening the batting with Rohit Sharma, Gill’s 13 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of over 143 set the tone for India’s mammoth total of 385/9 and ensured India maintained a brisk scoring rate throughout the innings, paving the way for a 90-run victory and a clean sweep of the series.

4) 116 Against Sri Lanka

In the 3rd ODI against Sri Lanka at Thiruvananthapuram on January 15, 2023, Shubman Gill played a sublime knock of 116 off 97 balls, anchoring India’s innings with class and authority. His classy strokes featuring 14 fours and 2 sixes, laid a solid foundation alongside Rohit Sharma before Virat Kohli’s blazing 166* powered India to a mammoth 390/5. 

Gill’s century ensured India never lost momentum, frustrating Sri Lanka’s bowlers with his fluent timing and composure. In reply, Sri Lanka crumbled to just 73 runs in 22 overs, handing India a record-breaking 317-run victory and a dominant series whitewash.

3) 121 Against Bangladesh

In the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four clash against Bangladesh at Colombo, Shubman Gill stood tall amid India’s batting collapse, playing one of his most determined ODI innings. Chasing 266, wickets kept tumbling around him, but Gill showcased remarkable composure and class, crafting a brilliant 121 off 133 balls with 8 fours and 5 sixes. 

From early pressure after Rohit’s dismissal to rebuilding in the middle overs, Gill carried India’s hopes almost single-handedly. Even as the lower order faltered, he kept the chase alive until falling at 209, leaving India just short of the target. Though Bangladesh sealed a 6-run win, Shubman Gill’s fighting knock highlighted his grit in the game.

2) 130 Against Zimbabwe

On August 22, 2022, at Harare Sports Club, Shubman Gill produced a career-defining knock in the 3rd ODI against Zimbabwe. Walking in after a steady start, Gill unleashed a masterclass of controlled aggression, scoring a breathtaking 130 off 97 balls with 15 fours and a six. He mixed elegance with power, rotating strike smartly before accelerating in the death overs to lift India to 289/8. 

Gill’s timing and placement left Zimbabwe’s bowlers searching for answers, and his innings proved decisive in a tense contest as India sealed a 13-run victory. His match-winning century not only earned him the Player of the Match award but also capped off a series where he emerged as Player of the Series.

1) 208 Against New Zealand

Topping off the list, on January 18, 2023, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, Shubman Gill etched his name into ODI history with a phenomenal double century in the 1st ODI against New Zealand. Facing a quality attack, Gill displayed supreme composure and elegance, accelerating seamlessly from steady accumulation to breathtaking stroke play. 

Gill's innings of 208 off 149 balls, laced with 19 fours and 9 sixes, was a mix of classical drives and audacious power-hitting, making him the youngest ever to score a double hundred in ODIs. Gill’s masterclass powered India to 349/8, and despite Michael Bracewell’s counterattack, India clinched a 12-run win.
