In a major development, Kane Williamson has stepped down as New Zealand's white-ball captain and declined a central contract for the 2024-25 season following their group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 19.

Williamson's future had been the subject of intense speculation after New Zealand's early exit from the tournament. With a stellar career spanning 358 appearances for the Kiwis, the 33-year-old chose to step down from the captaincy and forgo the central contract to prolong his international career.

Williamson's illustrious career includes 100 Tests, 165 ODIs, and 93 T20Is. He has also captained New Zealand in 40 Tests, 91 ODIs, and 75 T20Is. Under his leadership, New Zealand reached the finals of the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups, the 2021 T20 World Cup, and won the inaugural World Test Championship final in 2021.

His decision marks the end of a significant chapter in New Zealand cricket, with Williamson having led the Black Caps in three of the four major finals they reached during his tenure.

The cricketing world now waits to see how Williamson will continue to contribute to New Zealand cricket in his new role.
