Ireland to face Italy ahead of the T20 World Cup

Every edition of the T20 World Cup brings something new, and the upcoming edition of the marquee tournament is no exception. As the tournament is set to commence in February 2026, the cricket world is set to welcome another new member on the big stage as Italy is all set for their T20 World Cup debut.

To make their maiden season sharp, they are leaving no stone unturned in their preparation. Ahead of stepping into the big stage, Ireland is all set to face Italy in a three-match Test series in January 2023. Even the upcoming T20I series is going to be a historic one for the Italian side.

Italy’s showdown with Ireland marks their first-ever T20I series against an ICC full-member team, setting the stage for a historic moment. Adding to this, this series is going to be the final stage of their preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Holdsworth fires up the hype ahead of the Ireland-Italy showdown

Ahead of the upcoming T20I series, Italy met Ireland in the shortest format during the qualifier match of the T20 World Cup 2024. In that match, the Italian side walked away with a heartbreak as Ireland registered a 7-run victory. With the new T20I series on the horizon, the Director of Cricket of Cricket Ireland, Richard Holdsworth, shares excitement.

“We’re delighted that the Italian Cricket Federation has agreed to this series in Dubai. It is important that our squad plays some competitive cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup, and these three matches will be ideal for us as we acclimatise to hot conditions, having come straight from the Irish winter,” he said.

“The Italians did very well to beat Scotland and qualify for their first-ever World Cup, and we expect this series to be a hard-fought affair,” he added.

The action kicks off on January 23, with all three T20Is set to light up the iconic Seven Stadium in Dubai. Fans are gearing up for another exciting T20 series.
