The IPL mega auction is set to take place ahead of the 2025 season, as confirmed by IPL chairman Arun Dhumal on March 9.
Shortly after the IPL 2024 auction that took place on December 19 last year, several emerging reports indicated that the 2025 season will indeed be played after a mega bidding event among all competing franchises.
IPL 2025 to have Mega Auction, confirms Chairman
The IPL mega auction takes place once every three years, where each franchise gets to change their team composition as they are allowed to retain only a handful of players.
Arun Dhumal, chairman of IPL, recently confirmed that the IPL 2025 season will indeed be organized off the back of a mega auction. However, the exact date and venue for the bidding event is yet to announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
While speaking with Sports Star, Arun Dhumal shrugged off rumors that the IPL 2025 season will be following the Premier League model of players transfers, and stated that the Indian T20 competition will continue to follow their mega-auction format going ahead.
Dhumal also hoped that the 2025 mega-auction will be as “big and as good” as they have had in their earlier years, considering the format helps countries like Afghanistan to unearth new talents. He said:
“We will have the mega auction for sure, where you get to choose three-four players and then you have a new team. That makes it more interesting and that format will continue. Hopefully, the mega auction will be as big and as good as we have had earlier given newer talents coming in not from India and other countries. Teams like Afghanistan have also benefitted as they could showcase their talent.”
The IPL 2024 season, meanwhile, is set to launch on March 22 with a match between RCB and defending champions CSK. Back in February this year, the BCCI unveiled a schedule for the first two weeks of the tournament.
