Two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winning franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) headed into the 2024 Auctions with renewed energies after roping in former captain Gautam Gambhir as a mentor in a bid to regain past glory.

The team had retained 13 players including skipper Shreyas Iyer, Jason Roy, Nitish Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell.

Going into the auction, KKR were left with a purse of INR 31.70 crore, with a total of 10 slots available including four overseas spots. KKR's first buy was keeper-batter KS Bharat for INR 50 lakhs followed by Chetan Sakariya for INR 50 lakh.

With a purse of 30.71 crores, team management led by Gambhir emptied most of the pockets and picked up Australia's Mitchell Starc for a recording-breaking amount of INR 24.75 cr, which is the highest-ever in IPL history.

Interestingly, KKR had purchased Starc in 2018, but the bowler never played after being ruled out due to an injury.

Kolkata's first uncapped buy came in the form of India's Under 19 star Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who was purchased for INR 20 lakhs. KKR's next buy was former Mumbai Indians player and all-rounder Ramandeep Singh for base price INR 20 lakhs.

In the accelerated round, KKR roped in West Indies' Sherfane Rutherford for INR 1.5 crore. Out of favour Indian batter Manish Pandey joined his former franchise for his second stint, coming in at a base price of INR 50 lakhs.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman earned the second-last overseas spot in the squad being sold to KKR for INR 2 crore. The final overseas spot went to England pacer Gus Atkinson, which was picked up for INR 1 crore.

The final buy of the IPL auction for KKR was pacer Sakib Hussain, who went under the hammer for INR 20 lakhs.
