The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 trade window is open at the moment, and all ten franchises have a chance to strengthen their squads before the mini auction takes place in December. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost their premium spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, for next season as he announced his IPL retirement.

The franchise needs a solis replacement, someone who can deliver the goods and take wickets, and as per recent reports, the franchise has decided to go after Gujarat Titans all-rounder, Washington Sundar.

Washington Sundar to CSK a done deal?

Before Ashwin took his retirement, there were trade rumours between him and RR captain, Sanju Samson. But with Ashwin retiring, the rumours were put to rest as CSK have now turned their attention to another off-break bowler.

According to Tamil Samayam, CSK have set their sights on Sundar and have already started a discussion with the franchise for a potential trade deal. Moreover, if the report is to be believed, then GT has already agreed to release Sundar without posing any restrictions.

Why CSK are targeting Sundar

  • For starters, Sundar is a like-for-like replacement for R Ashwin. Both are off-break bowlers and have similar traits as they are known for restricting the flow of runs. Interestingly, Sundar will return to his hometown, Chennai, and the spinner knows the Chepauk conditions at the back of his hands.
  • Moreover, CSK need a solid finisher at number 7, something which they lacked last season. In six IPL matches last season, Sundar scored 133 runs with a strike rate of 166.25, and this new-found hitting ability could be beneficial for the CSK side.
  • The all-rounder was under-utilised last season, as he only played six matches, and perhaps CSK are looking to revive his career. The Chepauk wicket will help his off-break bowling and the franchise will look to utilise his all-round skills.
