Pakistan selectors dropped a bombshell when they sacked Mohammad Rizwan as the captain of the ODI side. The decision came in as a suprise as Rizwan did well as the leader in 2024, but due to Pakistan’s exit from the group stage in the Champions Trophy, the captain was removed from his position.
In his place, Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan’s premium pacer was announced as the new skipper and his first assignment will be the upcoming ODI series against the South African side. Interestingly, Shaheen was made the T20I skipper before the T20 World Cup in 2024, but he was removed from the post after just one series.
Revealed why Rizwan was removed as Pakistan ODI captain
Now, after a couple of days after Rizwan’s removal, the latest report from Pakistan media has revealed the real reason why the skipper was sacked from his position. As per reports by Samaa News, Rizwan, voluntarily stepped down from the captaincy position, and this decision was conveyed to the Pakistan selectors, and coach Mike Hesson.
Report stated that Rizwan wanted to concentrate on his batting as captaincy was affecting his performance and he was not able to play at his best.
Rizwan's performance as ODI captain
Rizwan was appointed the Pakistan white-ball skipper after Babar Azam stepped down from the post in October 2024. Babar had the same reason to step down as the captaincy was taking a toll on his batting. Under Rizwan, the Pakistan side did the unthinkable as they won the ODI series in Australia and South Africa and new stars were created.
However, the Champions Trophy in 2025 changed everything for Pakistan cricket as under Rizwan, the team lost to India in the group stage and got crashed out. However, his batting was affected under his leadership. In 20 matches, he only accumulated 625 runs, but the strike rate was questionable at 74.
