Mumbai Indians (MI) is one of the most successful and celebrated teams in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, faced significant challenges as they prepared for the 2025 IPL auction. With intense discussions about team retention, MI was at risk of losing some of its star players. However, Rohit Sharma’s selfless decision ensured that MI retained its core talent, strengthening the team’s future.

Rohit Sharma made a surprising choice and selfless choice. Though the five-time winner has led MI to multiple victories, he accepted a lower retention fee to support his teammates. Retained for INR 16.30 crore, Rohit is now the fourth-highest-paid player on the team.

This decision allowed the Mumbai side to prioritize players like Jasprit Bumrah (INR 18 crore), Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav (both at INR 16.35 crore).

The retention strategy focused on maintaining balance and recognizing the current contributions of active international players. With Rohit’s guidance, MI retained its “Big Four”: Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit himself. A source reported that Rohit suggested Bumrah, Pandya, and Suryakumar be paid more than him, emphasising their ongoing role in T20 Internationals for India.

“He was the one who said that Bumrah, Hardik and Surya play for India so they need to be in the top three,” a source told Indian Express.

“It has a lot to do with the respect Bumrah has in the team and his importance to the side,” source added.

The MI management faced another pressing issue: captaincy. Hardik Pandya, the current captain, received criticism after MI’s last-place finish in IPL 2024.

“If we had made a change, it would have been three captains in three years. That wouldn't have worked,” said a MI source.

MI Remaining Purse for IPL 2025 Auction

With ₹45 crore left after retaining five key players, Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to make strategic moves in the 2025 IPL auction. The team will likely focus on targeted signings to strengthen specific positions, aiming to complement their strong core lineup.
