Former IPL champions Gujarat Titans (GT) are set to retain captain Shubman Gill, spin wizard Rashid Khan, promising batter Sai Sudharsan and uncapped players Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia. According to Cricbuzz, Mohammed Shami has been ignored due to his concerning injury history.

Gujarat Titans (GT) built a team from scratch previously in its inaugural year in the IPL in 2022. They drafted Hardik Pandya, and under his captaincy, they won the title in the first year itself.

However, Pandya went back to Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, marking a tedious leadership transition. Shubman Gill replaced him as captain for GT, and unfortunately, both teams couldn’t adapt to the sudden change to finish in the bottom three of the points table.

Having said that, the IPL 2025 mega auction is an opportunity for GT to correct past mistakes and rebuild a balanced and powerful squad from scratch. As for retention, Cricbuzz reported that GT would go with the 3+2 formula, meaning the franchise might retain 3 capped and 2 uncapped players.

Captain Shubman Gill is a no brainer choice as he is the long-term future of the franchise. His leadership needs some sharpening which can be achieved via experience. Hence, Gill will be the first retention for INR 18 crores.

Next up is Afghanistan spin wizard Rashid Khan. Rashid is a big name in world cricket right now and his agents are notorious when it comes to negotiations. Hence, GT will have to tackle them to avoid overspending.

Another significant name is Sai Sudharsan. After a breakout year in IPL 2024, when he scored over 500 runs, Sudharsan made his debut for India and became a capped player. Hence, as third retention, he is in for a steep salary hike.

Interestingly, Mohammed Shami, India’s premier pacer, will be released by GT due to the fast bowler’s long history of injury. He is currently in rehab with ankle and knee issues and GT are reluctant to allocate him big bucks without the certainty of his participation.

As for the uncapped category, GT is likely to bag experienced finisher Rahul Tewatia in a steal deal. While he was bought for INR 9 crore in the 2022 auction, Tewatia will likely have to settle for INR 4 crore this season.

Lastly, Shahrukh Khan, another lower-order finisher, is on GT’s probable list. He was also bought for INR 7.4 crores in auction but will settle for INR 4 crore due to the uncapped player salary cap.
