Gujarat Titans to reportedly retain 3 players ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction (@gyan_rathi96/X.com)
The IPL 2025 retention deadline is less than 24 hours away, and Gujarat Titans, former champions, are most likely to retain captain Shubman Gill, senior spinner Rashid Khan, and promising batter Sai Sudharsan. Besides, uncapped players Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan are also in consideration.
Gujarat Titans (GT) underwent a leadership transition in just two years post its existence as Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2024. Shubman Gill, also India's future captaincy prospect, was announced replacement. However, the transitions didn't yield the desired results, as GT finished 8th on the points table. Regardless, with the mega auction in sight, the franchise will rebuild a strong and balanced team from scratch.
Gujarat Titans likely to go with 3+2 retention plan
As for the retention, the deadline will close on October 30. As per an inside IPL source, GT has agreed to retain Shubman Gill as the first-choice retention, and he is expected to stay as captain.
For second retention, GT will turn to Afghanistan spin sensation Rashid Khan. He picked 19 wickets in 2022 and 27 dismissals in the following year. However, in IPL 2024, his form took a hit as he scalped only 10 wickets in 12 games.
Next on GT's radar is promising Tamil Nadu batter Sai Sudharsan who had a stellar run in IPL 2024 with 527 runs, including a hundred, in 12 games played. Sai also made his debut for team India and featured in three ODIs and a T20I. In addition to this, Rahul Tewatia, a seasoned IPL batter, is in consideration for the uncapped category along with Shahrukh Khan. Both have flair to bat in the lower middle order as finishers.
Notably, a maximum of 6 retentions per franchise is allowed ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Hence, GT can retain less than 6 and then continue with RTM cards in the mega auction.
GT interested to rope in Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar, the Pune Test hero for India, is popular amongst several IPL franchises ahead of the mega auction. He is likely to be released by SRH, and given his recent dominance in home conditions, Sundar is reportedly being considered by Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Chennai Super Kings. Sundar picked 11 wickets against New Zealand in the Pune Test, and before that, he also scored a ton in the Ranji Trophy.
