For the IPL 2025 season, Rajasthan Royals (RR) retained a total of 6 players at the October 31 deadline. Showing faith in youth, RR cashed out INR 79 crores and are left with INR 41 crore for the upcoming mega auction.
Rajasthan Royals roped in Rahul Dravid as head coach for the IPL 2025 season. He was a part of the think tank that finalised the retention list. Sanju Samson, the skipper, also had a big say in the final list.
Days leading up to the retention deadline, RR were rumoured to release promising wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel. However, seeing his rise in international cricket, RR noticed him as a future prospect.
Moreover, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the aggressive opener, had an underwhelming season in 2024. However, Jaiswal is the future of Indian cricket, and seeing his potential, RR protected him from the mega auction.
Another key youngster retained was Riyan Parag. RR invested years to transform Parag into a match-winner. Hence, it would have been foolish to let him go when he is just on the brink of a breakout season.
Lastly, RR retained Shimron Hetmyer given his proficiency in hard hitting. For the uncapped category, RR chose to put faith in Sandeep Sharma. Sandeep had a terrific season with the new ball in IPL 2024 and hence the Royals viewed him as a promising future prospect.
Rajasthan Royals' retention list:
- Sanju Samson: INR 18 crore
- Yashasvi Jaiswal: INR 18 crore
- Riyan Parag: INR 14 crore
- Dhruv Jurel: INR 14 crore
- Shimron Hetmyer: INR 11 crore
- Sandeep Sharma: INR 4 crore
Total amount spent: INR 79 crore
Remaining purse: INR 41 crore
Overall, Rajasthan Royals retained their core from the IPL 2024 season. The retained players mostly consisted of young promising Indian prospects who can carry the franchise for years to come. It suggests that RR’s vision is long-term and the same approach will be seen at the IPL 2025 auction table as well.
