Virat Kohli stands on the brink of another jaw-dropping record next to his name as he gears up for a return to competitive cricket via the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The batting legend is six runs shy of joining an elite list of batters to have produced 12,000 and more runs in overall T20 cricket.

Kohli, who has been a permanent feature for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) since the IPL's inception in 2008, will enter an esteemed bracket of players who have excelled in the shortest format when he scores his first six runs of the IPL 2024 for the famed franchise.

Notably, the 35-year-old currently boasts of an overall T20 tally of 11,994 runs after playing 376 matches, out of which 4,037 runs have arrived in T20Is for India.

He is the highest run-scorer in T20Is in the world and will also become the first Indian to get 12,000 T20 runs when he makes his next six runs in the upcoming tournament.

Kohli appears set to breach the coveted milestone during RCB's opening game of the IPL 2024 on March 22 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). When he does reach the 12,000-run mark, the veteran right-hander will become only the sixth batter in the history of T20s to get there.

Kohli will join numero uno and West Indies legend Chris Gayle (14,562), Shoaib Malik (13,360), Kieron Pollard (12,900), Alex Hales (12,225) and David Warner (12,065) in a rare list of players to have already registered 12,000 or more runs in T20 cricket.

Among the Indians on the list, the batting great holds the No.1 spot, with his captaincy successor Rohit Sharma placed second after 11,156 runs. Rohit is followed by Shikhar Dhawan (9,465), Suresh Raina (8,654) and KL Rahul (7,066) at third, fourth and fifth spot, respectively
