Backlash continued for Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper and comeback allrounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday (March 18) as the franchise's passionate fans trended a controversial #RIPHardikPandya to reinforce their disappointment with the sacking of Rohit Sharma.

Ever since the removal of the experienced Indian opener from the helm of affairs despite transforming the franchise's fortunes with five IPL titles under his captaincy, Pandya has faced the wrath of MI and Rohit's fans, who had disapproved of his ascent to leadership in the presence of their idol.

It was evident on social media when the Mumbai franchise lost heaps of followers on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

But on Monday, those fans perhaps crossed the line with a series of derogatory tweets made against the new skipper, who returns after a two-year successful stint as captain of Gujarat Titans (GT).

Pandya Faces Poor Backlash Over MI Takeover

The demeaning and disrespectful tweets were made under a poor hashtag of #RIPHardik Pandya even as the man attended a pre-season press conference held in Mumbai and insisted there is no sense of animosity or love lost between him and his predecessor, who rejoined the team the start day.

"Rohit Sharma is Captain of Team India which helps me, what this team has achieved, was achieved under his leadership and I just carry forward. I played whole career under him and I know he will always have his hand on my shoulder," Pandya had said in response to a query during his first media interaction as MI captain.

The respectful remarks from Hardik were made amidst a backlash persisting in the backdrop on social media with tweets made to troll him and show why Rohit remains the crowd's preferred leader for the five-time champions.

Mumbai kickstart their campaign on Sunday (March 24) against Pandya's old franchise the Titans in Ahmedabad.
