The wait is almost over as the Optus Stadium Perth will witness the first Test match between India and Australia from November 22. This will be the second time the two teams will face off at the new Perth Stadium, which provides seam movement and extra bounce for the fast bowlers.
Interestingly, WACA Ground was the older one in Perth and was known to provide the fastest surface which was a nightmare for the batters. However, the Australian team eventually shifted its base to the new Optus Stadium, which mimics the same traits as the old stadium. The Indian cricket team will face a stern challenge on a spongy wicket and they will have to bring out their best to challenge the Aussies.
Ahead of the 1st Test in Perth, we look at Team India's record here, their highest run scorer and the bowler with the most wickets.
India's dismal record at Perth
Taking into account both the old and the new stadium, India has played 5 Tests, and has only won a solitary encounter, which came during the 2007-08 season.
In 1977, Australia defeated India by 2 wickets, and the trend continued during the 1992 tour when despite a Sachin Tendulkar century, Team India crumbled and lost the match by 300 runs. Team India, however bounced back to win the Perth Test in 2008, but were brought down in 2012 when the home side won the match by an innings and 37 runs.
In 2018, India and Australia played at the new Perth Stadium and India lost the contest on a green top. Virat Kohli slammed a scintillating ton, but the batters crumbled in front of a hostile bowling.
Most runs by an Indian batter at Perth
Former India captain, Virat Kohli tops the run-scoring charts for India at this venue. He has 259 runs in two Tests, and interestingly, he played his first Test at the old Perth stadium, and the second one at the new venue.
Meanwhile, his idol, Sachin Tendulkar is at the second spot with 226 runs in three Tests, including a stellar ton in 1992.
Most Wickets by an Indian bowler at Perth
The data for the old stadium is not available, but at the new Perth Stadium, Mohammad Shami leads the charts with 6 wickets. He took a 6-wicket haul in the 2018 Tests, but couldn't figure out a way to inspire the team to victory. The second on the list is Jasprit Bumrah with 5 wickets.
Memorable matches for India at Perth
India doesn't have too many memories at this venue, but their historic win in 2008 will forever be etched in history. The team lost the first two Tests of the series, and also had racism allegations against them.
However, they quickly put the negativity aside and hammered the Australian side to win their first-ever Test match at this venue.
