India to ignore Shubman Gill in Asia Cup 2025 squad [Source: @GarhManmohan/X.com]
India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill, could face a major setback ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 T20I tournament. Despite his strong form in Test cricket, he will reportedly be replaced by Yashasvi Jaiswal in the soon-to-be-released squad.
According to a report from the Indian Express, the selectors and team management are not keen on making changes to the top order that has been performing consistently.
The opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma has been successful, and the management feels that breaking this partnership would be unfair.
Selectors Prefer Yashasvi Jaiswal Over Shubman Gill For Asia Cup
The report further mentioned that Shubman Gill will be omitted from the Asia Cup 2025 squad, not due to a lack of talent but due to a tough selection dilemma.
If he is included, he will need to open the innings or play in the top order. But that would push either Samson or Abhishek out of the playing XI, something the team is reluctant to do.
Even the option of dropping Tilak Varma, currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC T20I batting rankings, was reportedly discussed but quickly ruled out.
Instead of Gill, the selectors are reportedly looking at Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener, who was part of India’s World Cup-winning squad in 2024. In his T20I career so far, Jaiswal has hit 723 runs with a 36.15 average and a hundred.
Gill Likely To Lose Back-Up Spot As Well
It’s also important to note that the selectors reportedly feel it makes little sense to keep Shubman Gill as a backup if he is not going to start. Considering that he is coming off a tiring 5-Test series against England, resting Gill appears to be a logical choice rather than just letting him warm the bench.
Gill last played a T20I in July 2024 against Sri Lanka. Since then, India have played against Bangladesh, South Africa, and England without picking him. His recent Test success had fuelled talks of him becoming an all-format leader, but the selectors are not ready to make such a big change yet.
The final decision will be made on August 19, when the selectors meet with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia
