Asia Cup to go ahead as planned [Source: @mufaddal_vohra/X]
According to emerging reports, the Asia Cup is expected to commence this year despite the recent geopolitical dispute between India and Pakistan. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected to release the schedule for the mega event in the first week of July.
Asia Cup To Proceed As Planned Despite India-Pakistan Border Conflict
The bilateral ties between neighbouring countries, India and Pakistan, worsened in May. In response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Pahalgam, India launched a retaliatory attack under Operation Sindoor, targeting multiple terrorist bases in the rival country.
The military conflict adversely affected the relationship between the two nations, jeopardising the possibility of an India vs Pakistan encounter in the Asia Cup. Thus, considering the significance of this clash from a business perspective, the future of multinational competition actually looked bleak during that period.
However, as reported by Cricbuzz, both India and Pakistan are set to feature in the Asia Cup, which is expected to kick off on September 10. Meanwhile, the ACC plans to start the build-up of the high-profile clash by releasing the official schedule in the first week of July.
Apart from India and Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE and Afghanistan will participate in the six-team event that will be played in the T20 format.
UAE Frontrunner To Host Asia Cup; Hybrid Model Also In Consideration
The report also states that the tournament will likely be played in the United Arab Emirates, with India playing as the host side. Due to obvious reasons, the ACC has decided to conduct the tournament in neutral venues when either India or Pakistan are its designated hosts.
Having said that, there are also discussions about conducting the tournament in a hybrid mode, similar to the one adopted for the recently held ICC Champions Trophy.
Although the BCCI, ICC, or ACC haven't released official statements, it's understood that the India vs. Pakistan rivalry will continue in major tournaments, while the possibility of both teams colliding in a bilateral series remains non-existent for the time being.
