The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is set to honour Indian stalwart Virat Kohli with a golden bat on his 35th birthday during the India versus South Africa World Cup 2023 match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 5.

Originally, the CAB had grandiose plans to celebrate the occasion, envisioning an elaborate birthday bash for Kohli, widely regarded as 'King Kohli' in cricketing circles. However, these plans encountered a snag due to directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), leading to a scaling down of the celebrations.

Despite these setbacks, the CAB remained firm in its intent to commemorate Kohli's birthday in a special way and opted for the presentation of a specially created golden bat as a tribute to the celebrated batter.

The initial plan also included the distribution of 70,000 masks bearing Kohli's face to the spectators and a firecracker display. Unfortunately, these aspects of the celebration had to be shelved as the necessary permissions were not granted. The BCCI expressed concerns that overly extravagant celebrations could potentially lead to conflicts of interest, particularly with respect to marketing during the World Cup broadcast.

Acknowledging these concerns, the CAB adjusted its plans and settled for a more modest celebration, including a light and sound show for the spectators at the match. This approach aligns with the BCCI's stance of maintaining a balance between respecting individual milestones and upholding the interests of sponsors and broadcasters.

In a related development in the Indian cricket scene, head coach, Rahul Dravid, is expected to mark the commencement of the match at Eden Gardens.
