Shah took to X to share details of his meeting with Coventry, where the two discussed cricket’s much-awaited return to the global stage.
“It was a pleasure to meet with IOC President Kirsty Coventry to continue our ongoing discussions on the road to LA28 and cricket's return to the Olympic Games. We reflected on the progress made so far and the significant role cricket can play in the growth of the Olympic movement,” Shah wrote.
A golden comeback for cricket
After 128 long years, cricket will finally make its return to the Olympics, the last time being back in Paris 1900, when Great Britain bagged gold in a one-off match against France. It’s a full-circle moment for the sport that has since grown into a global phenomenon.
The Los Angeles 2028 Games will feature T20 cricket for both men’s and women’s categories. The contests will be held between July 12 and July 29, 2028, with the women’s medal match scheduled for July 20, followed by the men’s final on July 29.
The stage and the stakes
The matches will take place at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, roughly 50 km from downtown LA. Only six teams will battle it out in each category with 90 athlete quotas per tournament, meaning each country can name a 15-member squad.
Cricket’s inclusion is a huge win not just for the ICC but for fans across the globe who have been waiting to see their favourite stars compete for Olympic gold. It’s also proof of cricket’s growing influence, especially with the sport’s expanding footprint across the US, the Middle East and beyond.
Meanwhile, Jay Shah’s meeting with Coventry is being seen as a massive step in ensuring cricket’s smooth transition to the Olympic framework.
