The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced equal prize money for men’s and women’s ICC events going forward. During ICC’s annual conference in Durban recently, the apex body made the landmark call in a bid to boost women’s cricket.
ICC announces massive boost for women’s cricket
Both men’s and women’s teams will now receive equal prize money as per their performance in their respective ICC events.
Over the past few years, women’s ICC tournaments have witnessed a rapid increase in television viewership and popularity. Owing to rising popularity, the ICC has been already increasing the winners and runners-up prize money in events like women’s T20 World Cup and ODI World Cups since 2017.
ICC Chairman Greg Barclay described the council’s announcement as a significant moment in cricket’s history. He added:
“Since 2017 we have increased prize money at women’s events every year with a clear focus on reaching equal prize money and from here on in, winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup will carry the same prize money as winning the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the same for T20 World Cups and U19s too.”
The next women’s ICC event is the 2024 T20 World Cup, slated to be held in Bangladesh late next year.
However, the immediate ICC event is the upcoming much-awaited men’s ODI World Cup in India. The tournament will be played out in October and November later this year.
